Leather has become a wardrobe essential as it comes in all different shapes, sizes, forms, and colours. This versatile material can be worn as an outer layer, base layer, or accessory. It can be edgy while simultaneously being polished to adapt to both luxury and streetwear lifestyles. Although leather is most commonly worn in the fall and winter months, it is becoming increasingly more popular in the warmer months in different forms, such as skirts, purses, and belts.
History
In the early ages, leather was used for clothing, tools, and protection from the elements and predators (The Fascinating History of Leather: A Journey Through Time, n.d.). Later on, in the early 20th century, it was used to create aviator jackets, bomber jackets, and military gear to keep pilots warm in their fighter planes, as they were open-air and uninsulated (The History of Leather Jackets, n.d.). In the 1950s, as a result of the iconic figures Marlon Brando (The Wild One) and James Dean (Rebel Without A Cause), leather became a symbol of rebellion and defiance (The History of Leather Jackets, n.d.). By the 1990s, leather became more fashionable, being worn by boybands and moved from a symbol of rebellion to more grungy fashion (The History of Leather Jackets, n.d.). Today, leather is seen on everyone, from high-fashion models on the runway to street-style icons, bridging the gap between luxury and everyday wear, seamlessly bringing everyone’s style together.
Data
As seen on Google Trends, leather continues to be a top pick in the fashion industry. Interest continuously peaks around the colder months and dips down during the warmer months. However, over the years, an increased interest in leather goods has been seen in the warmer months. Searches for leather are most popular in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Ireland, and Canada. Recently, faux leather has gained more traction as the younger generations are interested in being more sustainable and cruelty-free but still want to participate in this timeless trend. The top searches regarding leather are leather jackets and leather purses.
Never Ever Saying Bye To Leather
Leather has been a constant in fashion for centuries, and it shows no signs of disappearing anytime soon. It has proven to stay relevant throughout the different eras of fashion as it can adapt to new trends and fashion easily. Moreover, leather continues to evolve, catering to sustainable and vegan consumers who are more conscious of their purchases. Leather has made itself a staple in many closets as it is an easy way to help people elevate their outfits, which they can reuse many times for years to come.
